believe the hype: it's that good. jack nicholson beyond-shines; matt damon further proves that he is an a-list actor; leonardo dicaprio has never been better. the real winner here is the picture's director, martin scorsese. creating a very raw, dark picture about the boys in blue, he does not sugar coat anything. and by anything, we mean anything. the violence, though often times brutal to stomach, is as pure as the cinematography. and the result is astonishing. this should finally score him the oscar that has so unfairly escaped his grasp for so many years. this film is so good it's almost sinful. and van morrison's rendition of "comfortably numb" is pure icing on a devilishly delicious cake.
